In 2019 a group of people working at DESY founded the Science and Society Initiative with the aim to initiate a discussion on the responsibility of scientists and science on the Society.

A series of talks and seminars was organized covering topics from Artificial Intelligence over the Nuclear Program of Iran, Climate Strikes, Black Lives Matter movement to Women Day.

Participants at the seminars came from DESY but also from other international institutions and laboratories.

The Science & Society Initiative ended since it could no longer continue its activities under the restrictions imposed in response to the war against Ukraine in 2022.
